G S Kelsey were awarded the contract through competetive tender to alter and extend an existing SPAR Store in Skegness. A 150m2 extension was added onto the back of the existing store to provide preparation areas for hot food and to provide space for the store to operate a post office inside. Extension work included new pre cast floors, masonry cavity walling, single ply roofing and internal fit out works. At all times the store remained operational which proved challenging for the site based management team who needed to liaise daily with the store manager to coordinate deliveries and key activities on the critical path of the construction programme. Extensive structural work was undertaken to the shell of the existing property to create the required open plan space to operate a retail outlet. A thoughtful approach from the client and their design team enabled the store to remain operational by phasing the building works. The final phase included a heavy civils commitment to upgrade the existing car park and HGV turning areas. Works were completed in advance of the completion date and also before the Jubilee weekend which improved our clients trading for the holiday period.
